However, there are generally some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pathways.org\/all-ages\/milestones\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">milestones <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you should expect to observe as your baby grows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We will include them below, but please note, these are very general and should not be taken as definitive development for all children.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the age of between 3-6 months, babies will generally be able to: &#8211;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">talk to you in simple sounds like \u2018coos\u2019\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">make different noises depending on need (hunger, etc)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">listen to you as you speak. They may even try to reply<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smile when they see their own reflection in mirrors, or their own images in photos, etc<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start to explore things with their mouths, and grab things (be mindful of what you leave within their reach during this period)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between 6 and 9 months, there is a good change they will: &#8211;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">randomly say \u2018mama\u2019 or \u2018dada\u2019, or similar words<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attempt to imitate basic sounds like \u2018ma\u2019, \u2018ba\u2019 and \u2018da\u2019<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">respond to their own names<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be able to hold their own bottle, and perhaps feed themselves with their fingers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From around 8 months on, they may be able to look at things when named too<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Around 9 to 12 months, babies will generally:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">use the words \u2018mama\u2019 and \u2019dada\u2019 at the right time<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be able to understand simple commands like \u2018give it to me\u2019<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">make silly faces or sounds in an attempt to make you laugh<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enjoy repetitive games and familiar stories.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between 8 and 12 months, babies can also start to experiment while playing. They may, for example, be able to: &#8211;<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enjoy throwing, and watching, an object<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">push things over, like bins<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">throw stuff at walls, like toys (or their food)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Generally test the things in their local vicinity, like toys, household objects, and, if present, pets<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through activities like this, your baby is effectively testing the world. They are also learning the fundamentals of \u201cif I do this, this will likely happen\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be patient, and encourage them whenever you can.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"It goes without saying that every baby is different.
